From a single event held in Orlando, FL in 2001 with only 97 trucks raising $17,000, the truck convoy has expanded dramatically over the years; raising more than $736,000 in 2008. In 2009, thousands of truck drivers, company owners, Department of Transportaion officials and law enforcement officers are expected to participate in events being held in 34 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics.
Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Through year round sports training and athletic competition and related programming for more than 2.25 million children and adults with intellectual disabilities in more than 150 countries, Special Olympics has created a model community that celebrates people’s diverse gifts..
